Overview

This trip will highlight the geology, geochemistry, geochronology, and tectonic significance of the Paleozoic bedrock beneath Louisa County in the western Piedmont of Virginia. Set in the immediate epicentral area of the 2011 M5.8 Mineral, Virginia earthquake, stops will highlight the Potomac metaclastic terrane, the Chopawamsic metavolcanic terrane, and the cross-cutting Ellisville granodiorite pluton.
